StructuralSister-Join
Deteriorated log cabin with rotted south wall logs, settling visible at corners, dark weathered wood
Before
Restored log cabin in Hocking County, Ohio — honey-colored logs, fresh chinking, standing straight in clearing
After

We pulled twenty-eight logs from the south wall and sister-joined every one. The original builder had notched them with a broadax — you could still read the angle of his swing in the wood. We matched the profile, used white oak from the same ridge, and set everything back in the same order he'd laid it.

Sister-joining with white oak · Broadax-profile matching · Epoxy consolidant on retained original logs · Full borate treatment before reassembly

Just Off Route 7, Near the Greenbrier

Greenbrier County, WV · 2024

Insect DamageChinking
Log cabin near Greenbrier with failed caulk chinking, dark staining, and beetle damage visible on lower courses
Before
Restored cabin near Route 7 Greenbrier — clean lime chinking lines, treated logs, standing in mountain forest
After

The powder-post beetles had been working this one for thirty years. We cored every log to map the galleries before we touched anything. Seven logs were too far gone — the rest we injected with boron rods and sealed. The original chinking had been replaced with caulk sometime in the eighties, and the caulk had trapped moisture against the wood for decades. We stripped it all back to the original mortar bed and repacked with lime-based chinking that breathes.

Boron rod injection · Gallery mapping with resistograph drill · Lime-based chinking repack · Full exterior borate spray on retained logs

FoundationCorner Repair
Settling log cabin at Lake Hope with visible corner drop, deteriorated lower logs, uneven roofline
Before
Restored Lake Hope cabin, level and square, fresh corner notching visible, clean foundation line
After

The northeast corner had dropped four inches over twenty years. We jacked the structure, replaced the two saddle-notch corner logs that had turned to punk, and shimmed the foundation piers back to level. The owners had been watching this one settle since they inherited the property from their grandmother. It hadn't moved a quarter inch since we set it back down.

Hydraulic jacking · Saddle-notch corner log replacement · Pier shimming and repointing · Penetrating oil finish on all exposed log ends

Morgan County, Ohio

Morgan County, OH · 2023

Full SealWeathering
Weathered log cabin in Morgan County with grey checked logs, no sealer, open grain visible
Before
Sealed and restored Morgan County cabin, warm honey grain visible, UV-protected finish
After

This one had never been sealed — the original builders assumed the chestnut logs would outlast everything. They were right for a century, but the chestnut was starting to check and open. We hand-sanded every course, worked a penetrating oil sealer into each growth ring, and finished with a UV-inhibiting topcoat. The grain came back like it was cut last fall.

Hand sanding to open grain · Three-coat penetrating oil system · UV-inhibiting topcoat · Scribe-fit replacement of two window-frame logs

Roof StructureCheck Repair
Log cabin in Calhoun County WV with sagging ridgeline, visible roof sag, checked logs on upper courses
Before
Restored Calhoun County cabin with straight ridgeline, repaired logs, standing in West Virginia forest
After

The ridge had sagged six inches under forty years of metal roof load and no interior support. We sistered the ridge logs, added two interior posts that match the original hand-hewn profile, and re-tensioned the entire roof frame. While the structure was open, we addressed seventeen logs with advanced checking — filled each check with a flexible consolidant to stop water infiltration before it could start the rot cycle again.

Ridge log sistering · Hand-hewn profile interior post fabrication · Check filling with flexible consolidant · Roof frame re-tensioning
