StructuralSister-Join
Before
After
We pulled twenty-eight logs from the south wall and sister-joined every one. The original builder had notched them with a broadax — you could still read the angle of his swing in the wood. We matched the profile, used white oak from the same ridge, and set everything back in the same order he'd laid it.
Techniques Used
Sister-joining with white oak · Broadax-profile matching · Epoxy consolidant on retained original logs · Full borate treatment before reassembly

Insect DamageChinking
Before
After
The powder-post beetles had been working this one for thirty years. We cored every log to map the galleries before we touched anything. Seven logs were too far gone — the rest we injected with boron rods and sealed. The original chinking had been replaced with caulk sometime in the eighties, and the caulk had trapped moisture against the wood for decades. We stripped it all back to the original mortar bed and repacked with lime-based chinking that breathes.
Techniques Used
Boron rod injection · Gallery mapping with resistograph drill · Lime-based chinking repack · Full exterior borate spray on retained logs

The northeast corner had dropped four inches over twenty years. We jacked the structure, replaced the two saddle-notch corner logs that had turned to punk, and shimmed the foundation piers back to level. The owners had been watching this one settle since they inherited the property from their grandmother. It hadn't moved a quarter inch since we set it back down.
Techniques Used
Hydraulic jacking · Saddle-notch corner log replacement · Pier shimming and repointing · Penetrating oil finish on all exposed log ends

Full SealWeathering
Before
After
This one had never been sealed — the original builders assumed the chestnut logs would outlast everything. They were right for a century, but the chestnut was starting to check and open. We hand-sanded every course, worked a penetrating oil sealer into each growth ring, and finished with a UV-inhibiting topcoat. The grain came back like it was cut last fall.
Techniques Used
Hand sanding to open grain · Three-coat penetrating oil system · UV-inhibiting topcoat · Scribe-fit replacement of two window-frame logs

The ridge had sagged six inches under forty years of metal roof load and no interior support. We sistered the ridge logs, added two interior posts that match the original hand-hewn profile, and re-tensioned the entire roof frame. While the structure was open, we addressed seventeen logs with advanced checking — filled each check with a flexible consolidant to stop water infiltration before it could start the rot cycle again.
Techniques Used
Ridge log sistering · Hand-hewn profile interior post fabrication · Check filling with flexible consolidant · Roof frame re-tensioning

Inspection & Report
$385
We walk every inch of your structure and deliver a written report within five business days — log condition, chinking status, foundation movement, insect evidence, moisture readings. No work is performed. You get the full picture.
The core work — pulling failed logs, sister-joining, addressing foundation movement, repacking chinking. This is what we do most often, and what most cabins need. Final price depends on log count and access.
Complete structural restoration plus full exterior treatment — hand sanding, penetrating oil, UV-inhibiting topcoat. We leave the structure dry, sealed, and ready for another generation.
